The 2019 edition of the Festival Musica sull’Acqua included the week-long MACH (Music Art Creativity Hub) Orchestra Residency. After a rigorous selection process, young musicians from all over the world in the early stages of their careers gathered in small rehearsal and mentoring groups with internationally renowned professional musicians to discover how to deepen their relationships with music and with their instruments. Tony’s mime masterclass focused the attentions of all 65 of the young musicians and the professionals on how their bodies function as intermediaries between their inner lives and their musical instruments. The masterclass got the musicians off their chairs and away from music stands and music scores and onto their feet to experience with their bodies the emotions coursing through them when they play. It also focused on their physical awareness of each other and how to sense what the others are doing. Classical mime exercises bring theatrical life to every part of the body, bypassing intellectual filters and going directly to the seat of emotions. Properly performed, classical mime can be a profoundly moving live theatre experience spanning the entire range of human experience.

MACH is sponsored by the Hilti Foundation, a long-time supporter of “El Sistema”, which was founded in Venezuela in 1975 by José Antonio Abreu as a means of using music for social change to counteract violence, drug abuse and child abandonment.

This year the Festival was recognized for its multinational work by the European Parliament and was awarded The Gold Medal of the Office of the President of the Republic of Italy.
